Located approximately 315km (200 miles) south of Manila and 2km off the northwest tip of the island of Panay in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines, this tropical island has on several occasions been classified as a top holiday destination. Back in 1990 it was voted as one of the best beaches in the world by the BMW Tropical Beach Handbook. In 1996 it was nominated as the world’s number one tropical beach by TQ Quick, a British publication. In 2007 Boracay was the place to be according to the Top 10 World’s Best Beach Destinations.

Focusing on kiteboarding/windsurfing, here are the bits and pieces that make this a great kiteboarding/windsurfing destination:

  • There are no cars, but this doesn’t mean you have to walk long to get places. Everything is about 10 minutes away, which is convenient considering the fact that there are no cars.
  • The Boracay kitesurfing centre is recognized by the IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization) and the BKSA (British Kitesurfing Association).
  • There’s a sandy 8 mile long beach with luxuriant tropical vegetation. The most popular beach in Boracay is White Beach.
  • This location has something for riders of all levels.
  • Boracay is one competitive venue for the Asian Windsurfing Tour. For one week each January, Bulabong Beach is host to the Boracay International Funboard Cup competition.

The weather in Boracay is divided in two seasons: Amihan (translates to cool northeast wind) and Habagat (translates to west or southwest wind). During Amihan there’s little rainfall and a prevailing wind from the east; during Habagat there’s frequent heavy rainfall and a prevailing wind from the west.

There is no shortage of accommodation in Boracay. There are more than 350 beach resorts in Boracay and they offer more than 2,000 rooms to tourists from all over the world. There’s also no shortage of restaurants, bars, pubs, and nightclubs.
