Dahab, a small town on the southeast coast of the Sinai Peninsula, approximately 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Sharm el-Sheikh, has made a name for itself for being a top notch diving destination because it has some of the best coral reefs in the world. You can go diving when you want to take a break from windsurfing, because Dahab is also a top notch traveling destination for windsurfing enthusiasts.

Here are the main bits and pieces you need to know about Dahab:

Dahab is windy all year long, but it’s windiest in the summer. The best months to go to Dahab for wind are April, May, June, July, August and September. The wind speed ranges from 15 to 35 knots. The wind in Dahab is a thermal wind that starts to blow at about 6AM and dies out at about 2PM. If it starts to get windy just after sunset, it is a good sign that the next day will be very windy. The wind usually blows from the north, north east.

The water in Dahab is predominantly flat with some chop. The water in the lagoon is fairly flat most of the time; it can get choppy when the wind builds.

The windsurfing centers constantly keep an eye out for windsurfers in trouble. If they see you are in danger, or if you signal for help, a boat will come and help you out.

In summer air temperatures average 24°C to 35°C while water temperatures average 22°C to 25°C. You can windsurf in shorts alone.
In the winter air temperatures average 20°C to 25°C while water temperatures average 20°C to 25°C. you will need a summer wetsuit on the water and a jumper while on land (especially at night).

Other useful information
There are many windsurfing centers in Dahab and they all offer instruction and rent gear. All types of riders will love the riding conditions Dahab has to offer, from the novice who is just now picking up the basics up to the seasoned vet who wants to have a bit of fun.

Finding a place to stay will not be a problem since there’s a huge amount of accommodation to choose from. The nice thing is that windsurfers are always welcome. Finding food should not be a problem either. The hotels offer great food and the local town of Masbat offers a great choice of restaurants.

Make sure you always have small denominations on you as tipping is customary in Egypt.

Other outdoor activities
Diving and snorkeling are your main options should you want to do something else apart from windsurfing. As mentioned above, Dahab has some of the best coral reefs in the world.
