Known as “the windy city” Essaouira is a fishing and touristic town in Morocco, and to be more precise, in the western Moroccan economic region of Marrakech-Tensift-Al Haouz, on the Atlantic coast. Morocco, in case you don’t already know this, is a country located in North Africa, bordered by Spain to the north, Algeria to the east and Mauritania to the south.

Should you decide to go to Essaouira to windsurf, here are the main bits and pieces you need to know about:

The best months to go to Essaouira for wind would be between April and September. The wind in Essaouira is a thermal wind that blows from the right, side to side offshore, north to north-easterly. The wind speed picks up during the day.

The best time to go to Essaouira for swell would be in the winter or whenever there are Atlantic swells.
If you want flat water, go near the harbor wall where the water is flat. If you want waves, go to the south of the beach (the waves can get logo high there).

You will need a wetsuit as the water isn’t that warm.

The water conditions in Essaouira are suitable for riders of all levels, from the novice who is just now picking up the basics to the expert who is simply looking to have some fun.

Other useful information
You can get windsurfing instruction and rent gear from the club Mistral of Magic Fun Afrika windsurfing centers.

You should not have a problem finding accommodation and food at an affordable price. There are plenty of hotels to choose from and plenty of people offering to rent you an apartment. The many restaurants in Essaouira offer delicious food at a very affordable price. You can eat out every day, try something different each day, and still stay on budget.

Since Morocco is a Muslim country, alcohol is hard to come by. Few restaurants offer alcohol, and the ones that do offer alcohol, don’t have very good food. Your best bet is to get as much alcohol as you need from the duty-free, on your way to Essaouira, as you will be hard pressed to find alcohol once you do get to Essaouira.

Other outdoor activities
If you want to do something other than windsurfing, you can go shopping (there are some interesting markets in Essaouira), go camel and horseback riding, do a bit of surfing, or go sightseeing (the African culture is quite interesting).
