Kitty Hawk, North Carolina
Located on the East Coast of good old US of A, in Dare County, North Carolina to be more precise, the town of Kitty Hawk is famous because the Wright brothers picked this location for their first airplane flights back in 1903. People interested in the history of flight and the Wright Brothers know that. People interested in things like water sports, kiteboarding, and having fun, don’t know that – but they do know about Kitty Hawk. Why, you ask? Simply because Kitty Hawk is a great kiteboarding spot.
Here are the main details you need to know about Kitty Hawk, should you pick it to have some kiteboarding fun:
The wind blows predominantly from the SW (side onshore) in the summer and from the NW in the winter. The wind blows mainly in the afternoon. The best months to go to Kitty Hawk for wind are April, May, June, July, and September. The months of March, October and November are not the best, but they can prove to be pretty good.
You will need to wear a wetsuit when riding in the winter. In the rest of the year shorts and a rash guard will suffice.
Kitty Hawk is a lagoon with soft sand on the shore and on the bottom. It is part of Pamlico Sound, the largest lagoon on the east coast. The shallow waters are ideal for novice riders.
