Formula Kite – IKA’s Solution for the Olympic Sailing Regatta

IKA - International Kiteboarding Organization, the governing authority in kiteboarding considers that Formula Kite is the best solution for the Olympic Sailing Regatta, as well as for the ISAF Sailing World Cups and other ISAF graded events. This solution is based on the IKA box rule which provides kiteboarding brands with the choice to offer official gear for competition. And indeed, specific equipment regulations and competition rules have to be set for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

The equipment should comply with a few parameters such as minimum weight and maximum length and width. According to IKA officials, the advantages of Formula Kite are: “sailors of a very wide weight range can compete against each other with equal opportunities; allowing brands to sponsor sailors and invest in them, further reducing equipment purchase costs to MNAs.”

IKA officials further state: "After the decision to include men’s and women’s kiteboarding as events in the Olympic regatta it became clear that further restrictions were required to ensure cheapest entry to the Olympics for MNAs while retaining the philosophy of the discipline of kiteboarding and enabling a fair game to all competitors" and that the proposal “makes equipment even more available especially to emerging nations, as local builders can satisfy the demands of regional sailors and their associations.“
