KSP Runs Auction to Help Blue Marine Foundation

The first time the Blue Marine Foundation was mentioned here on Epikoo was when we reported that 3x Speed World Champion Alex Caizergues broke a kite crossing record by taking only 44 minutes and 5 seconds to kite the 30km distance from St Barthélemy to St Maarten. Alex did this to raise awareness about the Blue Marine Foundation, NGO that creates flexible, case-by-case solutions to the marine crisis through public-private partnerships.

The Blue Marine Foundation, UK charity founded in 2010 that aims to increase the area of ocean protected by marine reserves from 1% to 10% over the next ten years, once again makes the news here on Epikoo and this time it’s thanks to the KSP. In time for the launch of the 2012 Kite Surf Pro (KSP) Championship Tour, an online auction was started with the aim of raising funds to support the Blue Marine Foundation.

What’s being auctioned is “Azulejos do Mar” a one-of-a-kind painting created by internationally renowned French artist Sylvain Rata. It is one of 4 paintings the artist came up with in honor of the 2012 KSP Wave Tour. Why 4 paintings? For the simple reason that there are 4 events on the tour – one painting per event.

Here is what the artist had to say on the topic:
“This cause is one that is close to all of our hearts – anything that the ocean sport community can do to raise awareness and funds is important. I am honored to have my art that captures the spirit of the oceans, be used for such a worthwhile cause.” KSP President, Kristin Boese, adds: “As kite surfers, we’re intimately aware of the fragility of marine environments and the need to preserve them. We’re happy that the proceeds from the online auction of Rata’s spectacular ‘Azulejos do Mar’ will contribute toward realizing Blue Marine Foundation’s ocean preservation goal.”

The painting is presented above; the auction runs here. The auction officially began on June 1st and will come to a close on June 14th.
