Trials on Day One of the Kitesurf Windriders World Cup

Yesterday we reported that a grand total of 34 riders, some of the best freestyle riders in the world, registered to take part in the Kitesurf Windriders World Cup 2011, the second to last event of the year on the PKRA schedule.

Today we are glad to report that the Kitesurf Windriders World Cup kicked off and that the trials were held on day one of the competition. There were no major surprises – all the main riders qualified to go on into the main event, just as expected, and the local Brazilian riders gave a spectacular performance, which was expected as well. After all, the Brazilian riders hail from one of the best kitesurfing spots in the world, a “champions factory” as Flexifoil-sponsored rider Bruna Kajiya put it.

What came as a surprise is the fact that Gisela Pulido will not compete in the Kitesurf Windriders World Cup. Airush, Gisela’s main sponsor, announced that she will not compete, but did not provide a reason for this. Gisela announced the same thing, that she won’t compete, but added that she will be supporting the World Cup from Spain.

Another unpleasant surprise came from Ivanildo Fernandez who injured himself on a bad landing. His injury may be bad enough to prevent him from competing; if that is the case, his spot goes to Naish-sponsored rider Nils Wesch.

The single elimination will begin on day two. Current leader of the PKRA World Tour, Youri Zoon, said that it will be a very interesting event considering the level of all the competitors and the different conditions the event’s location has to offer.
