Virgin Kitesurf World Championships Rebranded as World Kite Tour

The Virgin Kitesurf World Championships (VKWC), formerly known as the Professional Kiteboard Riders Association (PKRA), has undergone a rebranding process. Effective immediately, the organization has changed its name to World Kite Tour (WKT). This is part on an agreement with World Sailing, as the WKT will operate an official ISAF sanctioned kiteboarding World Tour.

It seems that the WKT will no longer be led by the Virgin Group this season. WKT officials announce a full and action packed agenda for 2016, as events with focus on delivering great sportive results will be held in France, Venezuela, Spain Sweden, Canary Islands, Germany and South Africa, starting in spring.

However, the struggle between kitesurfing organizations is not over. WKT officials have announced that they have taken steps to defend the organization’s interests in court, against the International Kiteboarding Association (IKA). Officials state: “The constant ongoing dispute with IKA has led to this decision. Therewith not only the legal rights of WKT will be protected but also the possible running of two world tours in the same disciplines is most likely to be avoided. On several cases all means will be taken to protect the long standing tradition of PKRA/WKT and its historic events as part of the tour.”
