World Sailing Announces New Agreement between IKA and GKA
It's done and dusted. Again. The International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) and the Global Kitesports Association (GKA) will rule the sport of kiteboarding.
Under the new agreement, GKA will crown world champions in the following pro kiteboarding divisions: Wave, Strapless Freestyle, Big Air (Twin Tip), Freestyle (Twin Tip), and Slider/Obstacle.
IKA will be responsible for running and crowning champions in all Racing disciplines. Both organizations will cooperate in what World Sailing designates as "expression events," but only at below "world level."
"I have always been in favor of mutual collaboration between the most important stakeholders in the sport: class, industry, and riders. This agreement will surely grow our disciplines and increase activity in the world, for the benefit of the whole community," notes Mirco Babini, president of IKA.
"The contract will finally give peace to the sport, and it is the base for a prosperous development, and for the advantage of professional riders of all disciplines. We all have to do our best now to live the good spirit of our wonderful sport and work together in harmony," adds Jörgen Vogt, director of GKA.
As a result, the 2017 kiteboarding season will feature several racing circuits by IKA and the GKA World Tour.
The World Kiteboarding League (WKL), run by Kiteboard Riders United (KRU), an organization with over 90 members, plans to work with GKA in the Junior and Big Air competitions.
