10 Tips for SUP Fans from the US Coast Guard

SUP has hugely increased in popularity over the last years. More and more people pick up the SUP board and paddle and head out on the waves to relax, compete or have fun. But there is one thing that all of them should consider before setting foot on the board: safety.

The US coast guard is highly concerned about the beach users’ and extreme water sports fans’ safety and always advises them to pay attention to safety precautions.
In a recent article, the US Coast Guard officials have posted 10 tips for SUP fans. These tips are available for all paddleboarders, regardless of their skill level. Check them out:

1. Wear a lifejacket and carry a whistle
2. Be a competent swimmer
3. Know how to self rescue
4. Know how to tow another board
5. Know the local regulations and navigation rules
6. Understand the elements and hazards – winds, tidal ranges, current, terrain
7. Know when to wear a leash
8. Be defensive – don’t go where you aren’t supposed to be and avoid other swimmers, boaters, paddleboards
9. Use proper blade angle to be the most efficient paddle boarder
10. Take a safety course

Remember that you need to be safe first and then have fun, and take these tips into consideration before starting your ride.
