First Waves to Present River SUP Film

First Waves is a program aimed to teach teens about standup paddle boarding, the art of filmmaking, video technology, and using digital media to generate awareness and inspiration for waterway conservation. It was founded by Ian Smith, a rider well known for his pursuits in whitewater SUP.

Ian instructs youth participants in standup skills, eventually teaching them to run rapids, negotiate whitewater, and surf standing river waves. Well, Ian in collaboration with the Pittsburgh Filmmakers Youth Media program also learns participants document their adventures and promote environment awareness.

Under the guidance of Paddle without Pollution, a local conservation organization that uses non-powered watercrafts for stream cleanups, the guys at First Waves showcased what it means to care for the local waterways. And it was all documented.

The program’s first film premiere is set for the 20th of February at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh. Don’t miss it.
