Travis Grant and Sonni Hönscheid Win the Molokai 2 Oahu Downwind Race

This year’s Molokai 2 Oahu Downwind Race across the great Ka’iwi Channel, one of the most challenging events in SUP world, saw less than perfect conditions. It took place in the most windless day in decades for the event.

The riders had to battle their way to the finish in flat conditions, better suited for water-skiers than downwind racers, putting their endurance to a huge test. As Maui downwind paddler and race coach, Suzie Cooney, put in a SUP mag interview before the race: “Without wind, this crossing is about the paddlers’ best prepared to race under any condition.”

This year, Australian Travis Grant and Germany’s Sonni Hönscheid proved to be the most determined riders, claiming the wins. To imagine how difficult the race was, consider that iconic riders like Slater Trout, Livio Menelau, Jeremy Riggs and six-time M2M and two-time M2O champ, Connor Baxter dropped out of the race before finish.
