Will Schmidt Completes Record Open Ocean SUP Expedition
Will Schmidt is a well known Southern California Lifestyle SUP Athlete. More than that, he is an adventurer and a true waterman. A few days ago he set on a daring solo open ocean stand up paddle journey on a record breaking 220 nautical miles course.
Well, Will successfully completed this record-setting seven-day, 220-mile solo open ocean SUP expedition and escorted by a 34′ Catalina sailboat he travelled by SUP board from mainland California in Oxnard all the way to Anacapa Island, Santa Cruz Island, then Santa Barbara Island, followed by Catalina Harbor on Catalina Island, San
Clemente Island, then back to Avalon on Catalina Island and into Dana Point Harbor’s Baby Beach.
He managed to reach all five inner California Channel Islands. Seven channels were crossed, with 220 statute miles traversed solo and consecutively, on 14′ Infinity SUPs with SUP Gladiator Pro Model fins. Will Schmidt set a few world records in his journey. He became the first person to standup paddle all inner Channel Islands from shore to shore, the first person to paddle the length of the Catalina Channel twice, he has the highest paddling mileage in the Channel Islands and he established a record time for Catalina Channel crossing time on SUP of 7:47:33.
This amazing journey was a charity act, as the proceeds from this adventure will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project to aid in anxiety, depression, and PTSD research, as well as Casa Hogar Orphanage in Mexico.
