Why You Too Should Start Windsurfing

Windsurfing Is Fun

After much deliberation I’ve come up with a top five reasons why windsurfing is the right sport for you:

1. It can be tackled by all kinds of people, no matter what your age or skill level is. Windsurfing offers a multitude of disciplines that are both fun and exciting. There are in total 8 different windsurfing disciplines: Freestyle, Wave windsurfing, Olympic Boardsailing, Formula Windsurfing, Slalom, Super X, and Speed windsurfing.

2. Learning to windsurf is fairly easy. Forget about all those images of windsurfers falling off their board and spending more time in the water recovering from a wipeout than sailing in the wind. Modern windsurfing equipment is so easy to use that you will hardly wipe out (even when picking up the basics of windsurfing. Sure, falling in is inevitable and you will eventually wipe out – it is all part of the sport, but the great thing is that you will not hurt yourself (water isn’t hard like concrete is).

The learning curve is really steep – this means you will learn to windsurf in a short amount of time. Modern boards are wider, thus offering better stability while modern sails are lighter and more controllable.

3. You do not need to be in super-good physical shape. Well, perhaps for the Olympic Boardsailing discipline you do, but not for the other disciplines. In the windsurfing world strength plays second fiddle to technique; this is to say that as long as you master proper windsurfing technique, you do not need be as strong as Hercules. The fact that women and children alike can go out on the open water and windsurf is proof enough that strength is not that important. If you are a bit on the “fluffy” side, then all you have to do is choose your board accordingly. For example if you weigh 75kg you must get a board with a volume of around 180 liters.

4. Windsurfing does wonders for your physical and mental shape. By going out to windsurf on a regular basis you will stay in good physical condition. After all, windsurfing works a lot of major muscle groups, and you can make it as strenuous as you want.

It does wonders for your mental wellness as well. Just leave all your worries behind and sail!

5. It is one of the most sociable sports around. You will be hard pressed to find a windsurfer that doesn’t enjoy the company of other windsurfers. As a rule of thumb windsurfers are very sociable, always ready to offer a helping hand or a good piece of advice. Windsurfing as a group not only makes the sport more entertaining, it makes it safer as well.
