I just received the new Catalyst and went for a quick drive. I rode it for no more than half an hour in gusty winds, so this is not a review, just more like first impressions. Built quality is very good. The kite is reinforced well in all stress are... read more
Ozone Catalyst 2013 Kite Review
Kite Features
The Catalyst has always been a powerful freeride machine. And this year it remains the same exceptional freeride kite, but with a more all-round touch. The 2013 Catalyst excels not only at freeride, but also at freestyle and wave riding. As the Ozone team puts it, “The all-new Catalyst is a complete redesign but in the process we have retained the essence of the previous model that made it a favourite across the world.”
If you are a freerider, the 2013 Catalyst is definitely the kite for you. It offers such a smooth power delivery and a refined control, that any ride becomes a joy. You can enjoy a relaxing ride or push the kite a bit to feel some spice and feel a thrill. Multiple trimming options offer customized handling and bar pressure. On the other hand, if you favor freestyle, you must know that the Catalyst is a very able machine.
The open C shape and square tip design offer a smooth C feel. The Catalyst is friendlier than the C4. Even the less experienced riders can perform unhooked tricks or kiteloops with ease. The 4-line pulley-less system assures hassle free handling. In waves, the Catalyst feels very reliable and predictable. It offers excellent depower and big floats, as well as good park and ride abilities. The one word that can define the Catalyst is all-round.
The low aspect ratio assures easy water relaunch and optimal power delivery. The new planform helps relaunching and self launch. An increased leading edge and strut volume provides better floatation, relaunch and rigidity. As said, there are multiple settings for handling heavier bar pressure and slower handling and lighter bar pressure and faster handling.
If you need more words to complete the description, here they are: user friendly, predictable, reliable, and fun to ride. The Ozone Catalyst is the perfect choice for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders. The kite is built using Teijin Techno Force sail material and Dimension Polyant Dacron for the LE and struts. The tip area is Dacron reinforced for optimal load distribution. Internal reinforcements, plus LE and trailing edge reinforcements assure bomb proof durability.
