Bethany Hamilton - the Story of the Soul Surfer

Bethany Hamilton needs no introduction. She is not only a spectacular pro surfer, but also one of the few riders who survived a shark attack and found the strength to go back on the waves. She was attacked by a tiger shark in 2003, when she was only 13 years old. The shark ripped her arm off below the shoulder. She managed to recover quickly and she got back on the surfing board at less than one month from the incident.

Her career is amazing, if we take into consideration that she learned to surf with one arm and still managed to win some of the most prestigious competitions in the word. She won the 1st place at O'Neill Island Girl Junior Pro in 2005, the 3rd place at the Roxy Pro Surf Festival, Phillip Island in 2008, the 3rd place at Rio Surf International in Rio de Janiero, Brazil in 2009, the 2nd place at Billabong ASP World Junior Championship in 2009 and many other titles. In 2004 she won the Best Comeback Athlete ESPY Award and a special "courage award" at the 2004 Teen Choice Awards.

The Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board, autobiography written by Bethany in 2004 inspired the movie Soul Surfer, shot in 2011.

In this short video below, Bethany talks about her life and about her experiences, about the shark attack, about what it takes to get back on the board and compete in world class events. Take a look at the portrait of the Soul Surfer.
