The Billabong XXL Awards Winners Are…

The Billabong XXL Awards that took place this weekend was a special event. Not only that it gathered the best of the best in surfing industry, but it was the scene for celebration the entire surf culture.

Garrett McNamara was one of the top dogs at the Billabong XXL Awards. His record of riding a 78 foot monster wave at Praia do Norte, in Nazaré, Portugal on November 1, 2011 has been recognized and sits now in the Guinness Book of Records. Garret won the Biggest Wave Award for his performance. Riding the 78 foot wave, McNamara has surpassed Mike Parsons who was holding the record so far with the performance of riding a 77 foot wave at the Cortes Bank in California.

Upon receiving the award, Garrett McNamara said: "It's amazing we get to do what we do, I am so grateful. The world record doesn't mean as much to me, this is for the town of Nazaré and Portugal and for all my family and friends there. To be able to give them something to be proud of and inspire them, a world record for this town doing it tough in the middle of nowhere is great."

Garrett also won the Verizon Wipeout of the Year Award for a breath taking wipeout he suffered while attempting to ride a huge wave at Jaws on Maui, Hawaii in January.

The Sony Xperia Ride of the Year Award was claimed by Nathan Fletcher. He won the title for his performance of riding a massive wave at Teahupoo in Tahiti on August 27, 2011. Nathan took home a $50,000 together with the title. With his performance, Nathan Fletcher also won the Monster Tube Award. And it was not over for him yet. He also claimed the Surfline Best Performance Award for showing the most consistency during the last 12 months. Nathan is now the first rider in the history of the Billabong XXL Global Big Awards to receive three awards in the same night. He said:

"I definitely didn't expect to be up for an award, let alone three. It's a huge honor. I didn't expect that out of myself. The wave at Teahupoo was pure fate. Somehow it just popped up and I was the one who got it. Somehow, I'm not sure, maybe Sion (former award winner, Sion Milosky who drowned in 2011), gave it to me. I can't believe it. I guess it is all the result of hard work and I am very appreciative of that."
