Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards Wipeout of the Year Nominees Are…

Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards is a unique event which gathers the most prestigious names in surf industry and celebrates the best big wave surfing performances of the year. It is kind of like the Oscars of Surfing. The Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards ceremony will be held on the 20th of May and it will be broadcasted by Fuel TV. The event is supported by Monster Energy as well as by Verizon Wireless, XPERIA Sony Smartphone, Surfing Magazine, Air Tahiti Nui airlines and Surfline.

During this event, trophies will be awarded for several categories: Ride of the Year, Monster Paddle and Monster Tube divisions, XXL Biggest Wave, but also for the Verizon Wipeout of the Year. Verizon Wipeout of the Year award celebrates the most spectacular wipeout suffered by a rider during the past year.

This year’s Verizon Wipeout of the Year nominees are: Rodrigo Koxa and Felipe Cesarano from Brazil for their wipeouts at Teahupoo in Tahiti, Mark Mathews from Australia for his wipeout at The Right in Western Australia, Danny Griffith for his performance at  Shipstern Bluff in Tasmania and Garrett McNamara for cheating death at Jaws in Maui. Garrett McNamara is also nominated for Ride of the Year this year.

The surfer that wins the Verizon Wipeout of the Year award will also receive a $2,000 cash prize, while the team that shot the wipeout will receive a $1,000 cash prize.
