Huge Wipeout Sends Alex Zawadzki to Hospital

Alex Zawadzki is only 25 years old, but he is one of the most daring big wave surfers of our time. His latest big wave adventure took him to Shipstern Bluff, on the south eastern coast of Tasmania, Australia. This location was also known as the Devil’s Point due to its ferocious waves.

Alex started riding the monster waves, but was nearly crushed by a huge 10 meters wave after experiencing a death defying wipeout. Fortunately, he was rescued by a boat on the scene and transported to Nubeena, where he met the rescue helicopter. He is now in stable condition and we hope he fully recovers soon.

After the accident, he said: 'I was trying to get down the face, but the water was being sucked up so fast that it was pushing my board in all sorts of directions. […]I went over in a position like I was sitting in a car seat, but when I hit the water everything exploded and my legs got ripped into the splits and backwards. I knew straight away that something was wrong, the pain in my legs was excruciating.'

Martin Paradisis, a big wave rider and Shipstern veteran, who was in the area and saw the incident, reported: It's was as big as it gets down there today and for Alex to fall off in that spot and survive is a miracle really. Sometimes you swear they're not going to come up, not in one piece anyway. That was definitely one of those times. "
