Jeff Rowley Nominated for the Ride of the Year at the 2012 Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards

The Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards are regarded as the Oscars of surfing. It is a unique event which gathers the most prestigious names in the industry and celebrates the best big wave surfing performances of the year.

Jeff Rowley, the renowned big wave surfer from Torquay, Victoria was nominated for the Ride of the Year for his amazing performance of catching a monster wave at Jaws without being towed in. His ride at Jaws was part of his ‘Charge for Charity’ quest to aid Breast Cancer Australia raise funds for their projects. His incredible ride not only that brought him the respect of the entire big wave surfing community, but also the chance to receive the Ride of the Year award at the Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards.

Jeff stated: “I’m excited to have my achievements in big wave surfing recognized I’m really excited about the next few years to see where we can take paddle in surfing as we rewrite the history books of what’s possible by my peers and the Billabong XXL Awards. I’ve had laser beam focus this year to make sure I was at the biggest and best swells at the world’s best big wave locations. Paddling in to massive waves in extreme conditions is the new frontier in big wave surfing and I’m glad to be at the forefront of this movement. ”

The other nominees for the 2012 Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards Ride of the Year are: Nathan Fletcher – ‘Teahupoo’ Tahiti, Greg Long – ‘Puerto Escondido’ Mexico, Garrett McNamara – ‘Nazare’ Portugual and Ryan Hipwood – ‘Cloudbreak’ Fiji.

The Winners of the Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards 2012 will be announced on the 4th of May at The Grove Theater in Anaheim, California. The winner will receive a $50,000 cash prize.
