Mick Fanning Is the 2012 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach Champ

The 2012 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach ended with a final of epic proportions. Mick Fanning faced Kelly Slater in a battle which will remain in history. Mick defeated the 11X world Champ and surfing superstar Kelly Slater in a 40 minutes match.

The final started after a round of applause for Michael Peterson, the Australian surfing legend and three times Bells winner, who passed away last week. Fanning scored 9.1 in the heat, but Slater responded with a perfect 10 ending with a full aerial rotation landing flat on the water in front of the wave. But Mick put on an impressive show and scored again a near perfect 9.7. This time Kelly scored only 8.07, and Mick was crowned champ.

Kelly Slater tried to win the Bells for the fifth time, performance that would have set a record, but he remains with only four Bells titles, just like the Australian Mark Richards.

It is the second Bells victory for the 2X world champ Mick Fanning. He won the Bells for the first time back in 2001.

At the end Mick stated: “I knew everything was working well. I knew I just needed to go and simple things up. I took the headphones off and had a lot more fun. I knew there were going to be a lot of waves with the tide dropping out and I guess I just wanted to be on the good ones. You’ve got to just believe in your judgment and I’m stoked.”
