The first thing you need to know is that on the island of Corfu, the second largest of the Ionian Islands (a group of islands that includes the islands of Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Zante, and Cerigo) there are two locations called Agios Georgios.

In the NW there’s the municipality of Agios Georgios, with a land area of 39.445 square kilometers  and a population of 4,958 (according to a census from back in 2001). The town of Argos is the seat of the Agios Georgios municipality.

In the SW coast of Corfu there’s the smaller Agios Georgios location; this is the one we will be focusing on in this article. To be more precise, we will focus on what makes the SW Agios Georgios a nice place to go if you are going to pick it to get your kiteboarding/windsurfing fix.

Here are the main details you need to know about Agios Georgios should you pick it to do a bit of kiteboarding or windsurfing:

Wind
The best months to go to Agios Georgios for wind are May, June, July, August, and September.
The thermal wind in Agios Georgios picks up speed throughout the day. In the morning it is on the light side – which is good for the novices, who can use it to work on their skills. As the day progresses the wind picks up speed. In the afternoon it can get to Force 3-5. When the Mistral blows in, the wind can go up to Force 7.

Water
The water conditions are suitable for riders of all levels, from the novice who is just now picking up the basics up to the expert rider who wants to have a bit of fun.
You get flat to choppy water in Agios Georgios.
The water is warm enough in the summer (up until October), warm enough so you won’t need a wetsuit. The temperature in July and August for example is between 18°C and 31°C.

Other useful information
Agios Georgios can get crowded in June, July and August.
During the summer months there are numerous clubs that stay open until the early hours of the morning. In the winter months go to Corfu town to enjoy the nightlife.
There are plenty of hotels and restaurants in Agios Georgios.
The beach is rather rocky.
