Maynard, Offringa and Gollito Claim Victory in Fuerteventura

After 10 action packed days, the 27th edition of the PWA Fuerteventura Grand Slam has come to and end with Finian Maynard claiming victory in the slalom division and Sarah-Quita Offringa and Jose “Gollito” Estredo claiming the top spots on the podium in the women’s and men’s freestyle division.

The first two days of the Fuerteventura Grand Slam were lay days. In the scorching heat, the PWA slalom riders waited and waited for the wind to make an appearance, but that never happened. Even though there was no slalom action to check out, the spectators that came down to Sotavento had plenty of other things to do.

There was wind on day 3 of the Fuerteventura Grand Slam, enough for elimination 1 to be completed. Ben Van Der Steen was the one to claim victory in elimination 1. Antoine Albeau took 2nd place and Peter Volwater took 3rd.

There was wind on day 4 as well, allowing for the completion of three more eliminations in the slalom division – elimination 2, 3, and 4. RRD and Avanti-sponsored rider Finian Maynard put on a great show on day 4, managed to win elimination 3 and 4, and thus climbed to the top of the ranking. At the end of day 4, Finian Maynard was 1st in the ranking, followed by Ben Van Der Steen and Antoine Albeau.

The wind once again failed to make an appearance on day 5 of the PWA Fuerteventura Grand Slam, the final day reserved for the slalom competition. At 4PM, event organizers decided to call it a day, released the PWA slalom riders, and moved on to the awards ceremony.

Day 6 marked the start of the freestyle action in Sotavento. The conditions were suitable for competing only for a couple of hours in the afternoon. The men went out on the water and completed two rounds of their single elimination.

The conditions improved on day 7: the wind arrived earlier in the day and so the men and the women managed to complete the freestyle single elimination. Jose “Gollito” Estredo and Sarah Quita Offringa won the single elimination. 2nd and 3rd place went to Tonky Frans and Kiri Thode in the men’s division and Laure Treboux and Yoli De Brendt in the women’s.

The fickle wind on day 8 was a major source of frustration for the freestyle riders. Only two heats were completed on this day – one in the men’s and one in the women’s division. Things did not improve by much on the following day – day 9 was another largely frustrating day. The only good thing about day 9 is that the women’s double elimination was completed. Sarah-Quita Offringa, the winner of the single elimination, managed to claim victory in the double elimination as well. Laure Treboux and Yoli De Brendt came in 2nd and 3rd.

Day 10 was the final day of the PWA Fuerteventura Grand Slam. In howling winds, the men managed to completed the second elimination while the women completed single elimination 2. Once again, the ones to win in their respective divisions were Jose “Gollito” Estredo and Sarah-Quita Offringa.

This is Gollito’s second, successive win of the year. If he keeps it up, he may very well win his 5th World Championship title. The PWA caught up with the event winner and this is what he had to say:
“I feel incredibly happy to win the double elimination against Steven (Van Broeckhoven). It was difficult at the beginning of week with the light winds but finally today we got the strong winds. I’m delighted that I have won the opening two events but it’s not over yet, we’ll see what happens in Germany.”

The PWA also caught up with Sarah-Quita Offringa and this is what she had to say:
“I’m delighted to win the event and I also want to say thank you to Rene Egli for organizing the event, I’m really happy to be here and I love coming to Fuerteventura, both for the sailing and the people. I’d also like to thank Duncan Coombs and the PWA judges for their hard work this week, congratulations to Laure (Treboux) and Arrianne Aukes for her first podium finish.”

The next event on the 2012 PWA World Tour is the Pegasus Airlines World Cup, a slalom event that will take place in Alacati, Turkey, from August 27th until September 1st.
