About
British pro windsurfer John Skye, who is in his early thirties, was born in Luton, UK. Skyeboy (that’s his nickname) started to windsurf back in 1990 when he was 13-years old. It was his dad who got him into windsurfing. Every chance they got, they would both go and sail on Brogborough Lake, a 220-acre or 0.9 square kilometers lake solely dedicated to windsurfing. They usually went after John got out of school and during the weekends – if it was windy of course. After John’s university graduation (he went to Southampton College), he moved to Fuerteventura, which is one of the best windsurfing and kiteboarding destinations in the world. John staid in Fuerteventura for a year; during all this time he worked on his wave sailing skills. It was the perfect spot to train in preparation of turning pro. Skyeboy’s debut on the PWA World Tour came in 2002. After working hard and pushing his windsurfing skills, he finally made it to the PWA World Tour. What seemed like a dream when he was just starting out turned into reality. Skyeboy says that what he likes most about the World Tour is that he has the chance to windsurf in some of the best places in the world, with great friends around him. John says Goya, Polakow and Siver are the riders who inspire him. Some have pointed out that their influence is visible in John’s one-handed back loop. Friends and fellow windsurfers describe John as being friendly and laidback yet highly determined out on the water. When asked why he got into windsurfing, Skye said it is the perfect sport for him because it combines the best parts of all the sports he loves – ski, snowboard, skateboard, sail boats.
